ChatGPT beginner's guide: get real results fast
2 min read
ChatGPT isn’t a magic box — it’s a tool. Like any tool, the results depend on how well you use it.
Prompts are everything
Weak prompt: “Write an email”
Strong prompt: “Write an email to a customer notifying them of a 2-day delivery delay due to logistics issues, professional but friendly tone, under 150 words”
The more specific you are, the better the output. Always tell ChatGPT: context, desired format, length, tone.
Most useful real-world cases
Writing and editing
- Emails, reports, proposals
- Summarizing long documents
- Translation (English ↔ Vietnamese)
- Grammar fixes and style improvements
Coding
I have this Python code with an error. Help me fix it:
[paste code here]
ChatGPT explains errors more clearly than most documentation.
Research and summaries
Paste a long article and ask: “Summarize the 5 key points in 200 words”
Brainstorming
“Give me 10 content ideas about [topic] for an audience of [Y]”
Limitations to know
- Knowledge cutoff: its training data has an expiry date — it doesn’t know recent news
- Hallucination: it sometimes confidently makes up facts — always fact-check anything important
- Context window: very long conversations cause it to “forget” earlier content
Which model to use?
- GPT-4o: best for most tasks, fast
- o1/o3: for complex logic, programming, deep reasoning
- GPT-4o mini: fast and cheap for simple tasks
Start with 10 minutes of practice a day. After a week you’ll notice a clear productivity boost.
